Rimless Eyeglass Frames (also referred to as drill mount or 3-piece mount)
For typical frames, the lenses are cut to fit into the groves of the plastic or metal eye wire. The lenses for rimless eyewear are held to the nose and ear pieces by screws drilled through the lenses. The materials for the frame are the same as regular frames (nickel alloy, stainless steel, flexible memory metal, titanium, and/or plastic). They are available in many prescriptions and shapes and sizes.
Three-piece mount frames give the appearance of not wearing glasses, especially if an anti-reflective coating is added to the lenses. They are light-weight, particularly if they are titanium frames with polycarbonate lenses. Polycarbonate and Trivex lenses are recommended. These lens materials are more resistant to cracking when drilled, whereas plastic lenses may crack and create a star pattern at the drill point.
Rimless frames may be more expensive and more delicate than full or semi-rimless frames. Extra care must be taken with this type of eyewear and it may require routine adjustments by a licensed optician.
